Together! 2023 Events Programme

All of our events took place online via Zoom and were free to attend. Participatory activities were targeted at Disabled people and their companions, and everyone was welcome to join the audience. Performances and live events and activities had English captions and British Sign Language interpretation.

Celebrating International Day of Disabled People and Disability History Month. 



TBlack History Month 2023uesday 24 October 7-8pm: Our associate drama company Act Up! Newham premiered a new filmed poem about the continuing impact of the Transatlantic Trade in Enslaved African Peoples and sugar today. Includes an introduction by company members and a Question and Answer session. Wednesdays 12 July-23 August 2.30-3.30pm: Clary Salandy from Mahogany Carnival Arts/UK Centre for Carnival Arts led weekly Kitchen Carnival workshops, with further Kitchen Carnival activities taking place in Together! 2012 CIC’s Art Club and Pop-Up Poetry Club led by Alison Marchant. Participants created a filmed performance for YouTube that was released on YouTube on 17 September to coincide with Hackney Carnival Roadshow. Newham Word FestivalThursday 6 July 2023 7-8pm: The Together! Pop-Up Poetry Café, compered by Ju Gosling aka ju90, returned for the 2023 Newham Word Festival. Find out more about our weekly Pop-Up Poetry Club.



Disability Pride flagJuly 2023 with a celebratory event on Thursday 13 July from 7-8pm: Together! 2023 Open Exhibition for Disability Pride Month. Everyone who identifies as Disabled and having a current or past Newham connection, including working, studying or volunteering in Newham or taking part in Together! 2012 events, was invited to submit one family friendly image of their art for guaranteed acceptance. Progressive Pride FlagSunday 11 June 2023 7.30-9pm: Together! with Regard for LGBTQI+ Pride Month. LGBT+ Pride Month Cabaret in association with Regard, the national LGBTQI+ Disabled People’s Organisation. With music, comedy and poetry from Clare Summerskill, DL Williams, Vince Laws, Jamie Hale, Vron McIntyre, Mx Dennis Queen and more. Please note that due to contractual restrictions there is no BSL interpretation on this recording.


Newham Heritage MonthSmall square collage on cardboard, using strips of black, blue, grey and green card to create an abstract landscape of Newham Docklands, with a small red heart near the centre.Tuesday 6 June 11am-12noon: Celebrating Our Creativity Together! Participatory craft workshop for Deaf and Disabled people using Quick Collage techniques and household recycling to explore what Home means to us. Celebrating Newham Heritage Month and the theme of Our Creative Newham. On Zoom, followed by a sharing of the work created on our social media channels and our website. Dance on Screen Club with Sign Dance Company. Explore the themes in response to images by US artist Viviana Molinares, learn signdance theatre skills, contribute to a digital tapestry and help to develop Sign Dance Company’s next production. Led by Isolte Avila, David Bower, Ivani Ca, Rob Corcoran, Soobie Whitfield and Lila. This event is now over.
