Poems from this morning’s Together! 2012 Pop-Up Poetry Club (today’s theme was Music):
Taylor Henville: On music
On music
I don’t know what to say
It’s just there, everyday
It soothes and calms
It sizzles and sparks
Rumbles and crackles
It punctures the dark
and plucks a tune
On your heartstrings
Melodic, atmospheric
Its soul electric.
Dawn Barber: The Music Flowing
Music, music how I love to listen, you show me a new path to my life,
As you flow over me like the waves of the sea making me feel happy,
Lisa Stansfield, Kylie and much much more, you bring me to a big door of light,
Beat beat hurling my feet, please keep flowing over me.
Julie Newman: The Night the Music Died
The walls echo with music keeping me awake.
Thud, thud, thud the the walls now shake.
No sleep for me, this dark night.
The curtains closed, no light
Shines through, as my head starts to bang
With the sound breaking though…crash, clang.
What music is this, that thuds with heavy beat?
The windows shake, no other sound in the street,
Just the car alarms screaming in the discord
Now becomes a chorus, that roared
Into the otherwise silent night. Sleep does not come
To drown out the thud of the drum, the drum.
As I struggle to hear a tune within the sound,
No melody stirs, no words save the bay of the hound
Awoken, complaining, from the house up the road.
And the beat still went on. Unstoppable it flowed
From the house full of light, full of sound,
As the laughter and shouting hit the ground.
The lights in the windows come on one by one,
Nobody impressed at the shouty, loud song.
And I wait to hear the rowdy sounds die down.
Some pause, some release from the noise now grown,
Filling my world, as the neighbours awake.
They too wait for for something to break.
But without warning, a chorus of song,
Loudly shouted, all together as one.
No tune yet disclosed. Just noise filled the night.
Then silence. Blissful quiet. Not a sound to blight
The early hours. All paused, ready to hide,
But quiet reigned, sleep beckoned and the music died.
Blake Jarrette Gibbons: Music, Poetry, Lyrics: A Story
Music is such a beautiful thing, it is gives off vibes and emotions, those sounds so powerful that they release a inner energy. Many bands and artists take you on a different path, through different seas, flying through different skies and round different rollercoasters of emotions, it’s a story
Let the lyrics take you on a journey. Take these verses from different songs rolled together to make this poem, ready for the journey?
What can I do to make you love me
What can I do to make you care
What can I say to make you feel this
What can I do to get you there
There’s only so much I can take
And I just got to let it go
And who knows I might feel better, yeah
If I don’t try and I don’t hope
When you feel my heat, look into my eyes, it’s where my demons hide, it’s where my demons hide, don’t get to close, it’s dark inside, it’s where my demons hide, it’s where my demons hide
Hit the road where it forks down
Made good decisions, start from the gutter, you know it
Big city lives, fast lane living but
You never forgot your roots, oh oh
Back in town, daddy’s advice
Baby don’t forget that you,
Shine a light, shine a light, shine a light
Shine a light, shine a light
Everywhere you go
If I got locked away and we lost it all today would you still love me the same? If I showed you my flaws if I couldn’t be strong, tell me would you still love me the same?
I would take the stars out of the sky for you, Stop the rain from falling if you asked me to.
I’d do anything for you, your wish is my command, I could move a mountain when your hand is in my hand
Words cannot express how much you mean to me
There must be some other way to make you see, If it takes my heart and soul, you know I’d pay the price.
Feeling my way through the darkness
Guided by a beating heart
I can’t tell where the journey will end
But I know where to start
They tell me I’m too young to understand
They say I’m caught up in a dream
Well life will pass me by if I don’t open up my eyes
Well that’s fine by me.
I saw the signs and I ignored it
Rose-colored glasses all distorted
Set fire to my purpose
And I let it burn
You got off on the hurtin’
When it wasn’t yours, yeah
We’d always go into it blindly
I needed to lose you to find me
This dancing was killing me softly
I needed to hate you to love me.
This journey is nearing its end, fancy another journey, go on go on, go and put the music on.

- Demons – Imagine Dragons

Positive benefits of gaming on mental health. A recent report from Oxford University showed that gaming can boost wellbeing — this is one of the first studies to use actual playing time and not self-reported playing time. This was only a small study using two games, meaning that a much larger study is needed to track potential benefits across the whole genre. Poems from the Together! Pop-Up Poetry Club on the theme of ‘Morning’.
Blake Jarrette Gibbons: The Morning This Morning
The Morning after last night, the night ideally fell asleep at a good time of night, ready to open the curtains and face the day, the morning is like the warm-up session, time to get ready and set, creating a mental plan of action.
Radio goes on, hurry up 10:30 I want to listen to Pop Master on Radio 2 and see how bad or good my musical knowledge is today. If I know an answer I end up shouting at the radio, one correct answer that’s worth an extra cuppa tea, a bonus guessed correctly, that’s got to be worth a treat of some sort.
I used to be able to say I can party the night away, now I rather say I can lie and cuddle my teddy monkey and dream the night away and arise in the morning.
That hot soak in the shower helps feel lifted strain from the night and day before, a fresh clean feeling from the soap cleaning the outside while the smell helps release any stresses and washes them away down the drain. Even if I wake up after an insomniac night or a night of broken sleep a shower can help.
The smell of a fresh start, last night I may have been dancing in the moonlight, on holiday may wake up on the dock or the bay. A holiday , time to celebrate, is this morning, a morning hangover or a morning ready for more fun, maybe a swim or a run, if I’m alone could I get a morning shift playing on 2p slots? The morning ready for adventure, what will I do today, where will I go?
On a normal day, it’s time to take the dogs out, into the greenery of the park, walking under the trees and out on the open spaces, the quiet zone between the rush of the city. Better still when you can escape for the day away from that, hiding in the space of Hampstead Heath or even a escape out of the city. Ah well so beautiful, so sweet nature’s singing in the birds and blowing in the breeze, how the sky shines is more noticeable now. Get the dogs back clean all the mud off of them, if they’ve been for a swim try to dry them off, hopefully they’re still not dripping.
I wonder what music will be playing this morning through my radio, music, fresh clean feeling, a plan of action for the day, my mood and motivation.
Now I have had my warm session, my morning of preparation, I am ready for the day ahead.
Julie Newman: The morning
The morning is here…again
I sleep, I wake, the morning comes.
The unseen magician snaps his fingers
And the morning comes, again.
The sun is there, relentless.
Waiting to move through the day.
Until comes sleep, and as night fades,
The morning comes again.
The cycle relentlessly moves its course,
Time passes, then comes again
The day eases on, but the blessed relief
Of sleep is fleeting.
People change, they age,
Come and go. The seasons find their way,
Around the world nature takes her course.
And morning comes, again.
Our lives become full.
Full of laughter, full of life, sometimes tears.
The course uncharted and our own. We set sail
Through each day.
We stay, we move
Dancing our way, then pausing catching breath.
Waiting, til sleep calls us, the night time silent.
And morning comes again.
However bright, flawed,
Inflated by praise, defeated or tired.
The unseen magician will snap his fingers,
And morning will come again.
Dawn Barber: Hello Morning
Morning is here, thankful for another day,
You can feel the cold more now and the frost,
You want to wrap the covers around you more in bed,
You’re glad to get dressed in your warm clothes and have a nice cup of tea,
Morning is getting colder but when there is a lot of sun shining through the window,
It makes it feel better to face the winter.
Dwain Bryan: The light of the day
You can open your eyes in the morning, and you can see the light of day,
You can open your eyes in the morning and you can see the sun make its sway,
Sunshine shining through your window, the sun making its appearance,
The light can slightly blind you but you never leave the sun behind you,
It may make you hot it may make you sweaty, but with the sun you always will be ready,
When the sun goes down as it always does, to give you comfort, think of the stars above.
Crystal Peasey: This Morning
This morning is very bright and very lovely blue sky,
although it’s very windy and the leaves are getting brown,
And I wish the poetry was a bit longer as most people take part,
In the first half until the second half it always seems like we lose half of the people,
In the second half I don’t think people do the full session,
Whether they have other things to do,
Or whether they have appointments,
Or they don’t take a bath!
And finally a poem about Halloween.
Duncan Bridgstock: ’ Weenies
The witches

and
